Campaign Finance Reform
The new campaign finance reforms which will go into effect after this
election
cycle are worthless. They do nothing to encourage the average American
to contribute to political campaigns. Wealthy individuals and PACs will always
contribute as much as they can to support candidates. The problem with
campaign financing is not that wealthy individuals and PACs are contributing
too much money to candidates, the problem is that not enough people are
contributing anything at all.
Freedom of Speech means the freedom to support candidates for public office
without financial interference by the government. Currently, most
successful
campaigns are funded by wealthy individuals and PACs. In order to encourage
the vast majority of Americans to support their ideologically favorite
candidates,
I would introduce a bill making a campaign contribution up to $2,000 per
individual per candidate exempt from the current federal income tax. This should
encourage many people to get involved in the political process by contributing
to
campaigns for candidates they ideologically support, allowing them to put
aside any feelings of fatalism about the outcomes of elections always resulting
in
a candidate from one of the two major parties winning.
